‘I’m excited for my next chapter’: Raye speaks out after leaving record label

Raye has said she is “excited” to make new music “without boundaries” after leaving her record label following claims she had been prevented from releasing an album.

In a Twitter thread in June, the British singer-songwriter said she had signed a four-album deal in 2014 with Polydor, but added she is “sick of being slept on” and not allowed to release an album.

A few weeks later, Raye and Polydor announced they had “parted ways”, leaving the performer a free agent.

Speaking to Sky News on the red carpet at the GQ Awards this week, Raye said it had been “a lot to process”.

“I’m excited for my next chapter, really excited. I’m independent, free and I’m about to just really just express myself.

I’m going to do a couple of features this year, process everything and come strong next year with my own music.”

Asked what to expect from her new music, she said: “I think I was very bound to having to make one specific type of music – I’m a songwriter I have so much to express and I just want to do it all.

“I’m lucky my family is amazing and the industry support was incredible,” she told Sky News.

“I was very, very blessed.”

Last year, the singer released a “mini-album”, Euphoric Sad Songs, made up of nine tracks, and she has five EPs to her name, dating back to 2014.

She headlined her own tour in 2018, and has supported the likes of Jess Glynne, Halsey and Khalid at their shows.

Earlier this year, she was nominated for best British single at the Brit Awards for her 2020 track with Regard, Secrets – but was beaten to the trophy by Harry Styles with Watermelon Sugar.
