England fans were left bitterly disappointed after a 2-1 defeat to France saw their side crash out of the World Cup.

Three Lions supporters were hopeful after Harry Kane hit the back of the net with a “thumping penalty”, matching Wayne Rooney‘s England goal-scoring record and bringing the score to 1-1.

But after Olivier Giroud scored a second goal for the title-holders, Kane missed his chance to equalise, sending the squad home.

The England team tweeted that they were “heartbroken”, telling dejected fans: “We so desperately wanted this time to be our time, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“Thank you for being there with us every step of the way. Your support back home and in Qatar has been incredible.”

France will face Morocco – who earlier knocked Portugal out of the tournament, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo in tears – in the semi-final at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.
