A man has been charged by police after a campervan toilet was allegedly emptied into a stream at a Scottish beauty spot.

The alleged incident is said to have taken place near Castlebay on the Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, on Saturday morning.

Police Scotland said the 67-year-old man was charged after the stream “was contaminated with human waste from a campervan”.

The force said it received a report of the van’s toilet cassette being emptied into the water.

“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal,” a force spokesperson added.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) said chemical toilet waste must never be disposed of into a watercourse, surface drain, the ground or groundwater.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club has urged people to take their waste to a public disposal point.

The club said the alleged incident was “particularly disappointing” as there is a public disposal point for portable toilet waste in Castlebay.

A spokesperson added: “The club would hope that all those enjoying the great outdoors would choose to do so with care and sensitivity for the environment, such that the experience of the next visitor is as good as their own.”
