A woman has been arrested after a three-year-old girl was hit by a van on the Wirral, leaving her in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police arrested the 37-year-old woman from Leasowe following the serious road traffic collision.

A silver van collided with a three-year-old child, who exited a Nissan Qashqai near a McDonalds.

The incident took place on Welton Road, Bromborough, at about 4.10pm on Thursday.

The child was taken to hospital having sustained serious injuries, and officers said she is in “critical but stable” condition.

The driver of the transit van stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving while on drugs and child protection-related offences.

Officers have now appealed for dashcam footage and have asked any witnesses to come forward.
