‘At least 22 killed’ in Lewiston shooting – with police in Maine still hunting for gunman

At least 22 people have been killed and dozens injured after a shooting in the US state of Maine, with police still hunting for the gunman.

Authorities in Lewiston said they are investigating “two active shooter events” and people have been warned to take shelter.

“There is an active shooter in Lewiston. We ask people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked,” state police posted on X.

A Lewiston police source told NBC News, Sky’s US partner, at least 22 people are dead and as many as 50-60 injured.

Police released pictures of a man in a bowling alley with an automatic rifle and asked for help identifying him.

Central Maine Medical Center said it was dealing with a “mass casualty, mass shooter event” but didn’t give precise numbers.

Police said the shootings happened on Wednesday evening at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley.

They also posted a picture of a white Subaru they wanted to trace.

President Biden has been briefed and has spoken to the state governor to offer full federal support, the White House said.

Lewiston is a city of about 35,000 people in the far northeast of the US.

Maine has one of the lowest per capita murder rates in America, with state police recording only 29 homicides in 2022.
