Bournemouth’s Premier League game with Luton was abandoned after the away side’s captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Luton manager Rob Edwards took his players off the pitch at the Vitality Stadium and the game was suspended at 65 minutes before being called off a short while later.

Lockyer, 29, was later said to be “alert and responsive”. He was attended to by paramedics and staff when the score was 1-1.

He was stretchered off surrounded by the medical team, to a standing ovation from the crowd and given further treatment at the ground.

Luton said in a post on X, formerly Twitter: “Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher.

“He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides.

“Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern and loving messages for Locks.”

Bournemouth said in a post on X: “We’re relieved to hear Tom is responsive. Our thoughts will continue to be with Tom and his family at this time.

“We’d like to thank all the medical staff for their quick action as well as everyone inside the stadium for their support and unity during a difficult moment.”

The Premier League said in a statement: “The Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town FC has been abandoned due to a player medical incident. Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match.”

It’s the second time the Welsh defender has collapsed during a game – the first coming in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final against Coventry City earlier this year.

The following week, he told Sky Sports he had experienced an atrial flutter, a type of heart arrythmia, and had since undergone a procedure to treat it.
