EVs need a place to charge, even in the most remote areas. Subaru helped install a public EV charging station in the “remotest place in the world.” To test it out, the Subaru Solterra was shipped to the island of St Helena. Check out the video below.
Subura Solterra tests the most remote public EV charger
With over 1,200 miles from the nearest mainland, St Helena is considered one of the most remote places in the world.
Napoleon Bonaparte was even exiled to the island after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. The British government chose St Helena because it was so isolated.
St Helena is about halfway between Africa and Brazil. Its rough, volcanic terrain makes it a perfect home to a unique species found nowhere else in the world.
Although only four electric vehicles are currently in use, the island is filled with Subaru’s. With its first electric SUV rolling out globally, Subaru held a trial run for the “most remote” public EV charging point installed in the capital of Jamestown.
Subaru partnered with Norwegian EV brand Easee and the St Helena government to install the charging station at the Island’s museum.
The trial lasted two months. The Subaru Solterra was charged using an Easee EV charger connected to St Helena’s grid. It was then “put through the paces” across the island’s rugged terrain.
Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system helped the Solterra “cling to the volcanic isle’s craggy landscape.” After a day of driving, the electric SUV covered around 50 miles on the 10×5 mile island, using no less than 20% of the battery capacity.
“From Subaru’s perspective, it’s an honor to be involved in a project that could potentially lead to a fully sustainable future for Saint Helena,” Subaru UK managing director Lorraine Bishton said after the accomplishment.
By 2028, the St Helena government plans to have 80% of the island’s power come from wind and solar. It currently has a wind farm and solar array providing up to 25% of power needs.
The Easee charging station will remain on the island as it expands its infrastructure, with EVs being imported for tourist and resident use in 2025. Subaru said the Solterra “proved hugely popular with Saints,” and they received “multiple offers from residents to purchase it.
