Toyota is late to the game, but it doesn’t want to fall any further behind. The world’s largest automaker is about to shake things up with 10 new EVs launching by 2027 — tripling its lineup. The new models will roll out in the US, Europe, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia as Toyota looks to keep pace with surging EV leaders like BYD. Here’s what new models we know about so far.
What new EVs will Toyota launch by 2027?
Can Toyota make up for lost time? If you’ve been following the auto industry’s shift to electric, you know Toyota’s been dragging its feet. That’s about to change very soon.
Its new plans include tripling its EV lineup within the next three years so it doesn’t fall further behind. According to a new Nikkei report, Toyota will offer 15 EVs globally by 2027, up from the current five. It will also expand EV production to the US, Thailand, and Argentina to avoid tariffs and speed up delivery times.
Despite the uncertainty over the next few years with new tariffs sparking global trade concerns, Toyota fears it could fall further behind in its most important markets.

Currently, Toyota only builds electric cars in Japan and China. Although EV sales were up 34% last year, with nearly 140,000 units sold, the Japanese auto giant is quickly losing ground.

To give you an idea, BYD sold over 166,000 all-electric vehicles last month alone. Through the first three months of 2025, the Chinese auto giant has sold 416,388 EVs, an increase of 39% from Q1 2024.
Can Toyota keep pace with a slate of new models arriving over the next few years? In the US, Toyota sells the bZ4X and Lexus RZ electric SUVs. Starting in 2026, it will begin producing its first three-row electric SUV in Kentucky and Indiana. The company will also begin shipping batteries from its new NC facility this month, its first overseas in-house battery plant.

Fending off global EV leaders
Those in Europe will see three new Toyota electric SUVs, including the updated bZ4X, C-HR+, and Urban Cruiser. Toyota will begin building C-HR+ models in Japan in September.
A next-gen Lexus EV is scheduled for production at its Tahara plant in Japan, starting around August 2027. Around 2027, Subaru will build a new electric SUV developed with Toyota at its Yajima plant in Japan. It’s expected to arrive in North America, Europe, Japan, and other global markets.

With domestic competition heating up in China, BYD is looking beyond the border this year to drive growth. The company’s overseas push is already off to an impressive start with a record +206,000 new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs) sold overseas, but BYD is only getting started. Its overseas sales are expected to double again in 2025.
After opening its first plant in Thailand last summer, BYD has several more planned in Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia, Hungary, and other global markets.

In China, Toyota just launched its cheapest EV last month, the bZ3X. Starting at just over $15,000 (109,800 yuan), Toyota claimed its new EV crashed the server after securing over 10,000 orders within an hour.
Toyota expects to build around 800,000 EVs in 2026. Although that’s down almost 50% from its initial 1.5 million target, it’s still significantly more than the 140,000 vehicles it sold in 2024.
