Lucid Motors (LCID) vehicles continue to get smarter and more advanced. After introducing hands-free driving in a major software update on Tuesday, Lucid said the new capabilities offer a glimpse into what’s to come.

Lucid unlocks hands-free driving

Starting July 30, all Lucid Air owners will gain access to the new features through an OTA update. Later this year, it will be available on the Gravity SUV.

The update unlocks new features, including Hands-Free Drive Assist and Hands-Free Lane Change Assist. Lucid said the added capabilities “will allow customers to experience easy-to-use and intuitive hands-free driving and hands-free lane change assist (with driver activation of the turn signal stalk) on compatible divided highways.”

Lucid is investing heavily in advancing its ADAS and self-driving offerings. According to Kai Stepper, Lucid’s VP of ADAS and AD, the latest update “offers a glimpse into the future that Lucid is building.”

Lucid’s in-house software stack consists of 32 sensors. With more OTA updates on the way, Lucid has “a roadmap to continue to deliver significantly more functionality to our owners in the future,” Stepper said.

DreamDrive Pro is an optional ADAS system that includes LiDAR, visible-light cameras, surround-view cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. It offers advanced safety features, such as 3D lane visualization and, soon, hands-free driving. It costs an extra $950 plus tax.

Last month, Lucid owners gained access to Android Auto Smart Driving Companion through a software update (Lucid OS 2.7.0).

The Lucid Air is currently the best-selling luxury electric sedan in the US, outpacing the Tesla Model S and even many gas-powered vehicles in its segment. With Gravity output ramping up and more updates scheduled, Lucid looks to carry the momentum into the second half of the year.
