MLB mulls options for Mets-Braves as Ian looms

Major League Baseball is considering contingency plans for this weekend’s crucial series in Atlanta between the Mets and Braves as Hurricane Ian slams Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The rapidly intensifying hurricane made landfall Wednesday afternoon in Florida, while parts of Georgia are expected to see flooding rains and some coastal surge into Saturday. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has preemptively declared an emergency, ordering 500 National Guard troops on standby to respond as needed.

With the pivotal three-game series slated to start Friday at Truist Park, the National League East rivals and MLB have discussed several options, according to multiple reports, including a split doubleheader on Sunday.

The teams have a mutual day off Thursday, but MLB is not considering starting the series a day early, according to MLB.com. Relocating the games to a neutral site also was not a serious consideration as of Wednesday morning, according to MLB.com.

Mets manager Buck Showalter joked that he is on “double-secret probation” when asked to disclose details about the talks but told reporters that “we know what’s going on,” and noted that general manager Billy Eppler was leading the Mets’ involvement in the talks.

“I don’t get involved in it,” Showalter said. “[Eppler] is great at keeping me up to speed on it and what I need to know and what I don’t need to know. I’m perfectly comfortable that he’s got all this wired. I’ve got enough spinning my head.”

Fueled by warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, Ian grew to a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane overnight with top winds of 155 mph, just shy of the threshold of the most dangerous Category 5 status, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm trudged on a track that had it make landfall north of the heavily populated Fort Myers area Wednesday afternoon.

“This is going to be a nasty, nasty day, two days,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said early Wednesday. “This is going to be a rough stretch.”

The Mets and the Braves enter Wednesday tied atop the NL East with identical 97-58 records. The division winner will secure a bye into the NL Division Series while the runner-up will start a best-of-three Wild Card Series on Oct. 7, which further complicates MLB’s attempts to reschedule any games postponed by the hurricane.

A decision could come as early as Wednesday or as late as Friday morning, as MLB and the teams plan to wait as long as possible to monitor the hurricane’s trajectory. The Mets play a home game Wednesday against the Marlins while the Braves complete their series in Washington against the Nationals before the teams’ mutual day off.

The Mets, who led the NL East by 10.5 games on June 1, fell into a tie atop the division with Tuesday’s 6-4 loss to the Marlins. The surging Braves had beaten the Nationals 8-2 earlier Tuesday, setting the stage for what is now expected to be a weather-impacted final week to decide the division champion.

“This is fun — this is really, really fun, being in a race like this,” Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso said. “Tomorrow’s another chance for us to be great and we just want to continue to play the great baseball we’ve been playing all year.”

Following their scheduled Sunday Night Baseball game (ESPN, 7 ET), the clubs will conclude their regular-season schedules with three-game series that end Oct. 5, leaving Oct. 6 as another possible date to make up postponed games. Showalter joked that the Mets would be prepared to play a tripleheader as early as this Thursday.

“When they tell us to play, we play,” he told reporters. “That’s what we do.”

MIAMI — Philadelphia Phillies star shortstop Trea Turner left the team’s game against the Miami Marlins in the seventh inning Sunday because of a right hamstring strain.

Turner hit a solo homer in the sixth to narrow Philadelphia’s deficit to 4-2. When his turn came again in the seventh, Turner legged out a grounder and reached on a throwing error by Miami Otto Lopez.

Edmundo Sosa replaced Turner as the baserunner and at shortstop.

The 32-year-old Turner leads the NL in batting average at .305 and also has a league-leading 179 hits this season.

NEW YORK — Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was not in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Yankees a day after colliding with Austin Wells on a play at the plate.

Bichette was thrown out in the sixth inning of Saturday’s 3-1 loss by Cody Bellinger‘s 95.3 mph one-hop throw from right field when he attempted to score on a single by Nathan Lukes.

He hobbled off the field with the assistance of a trainer after colliding with Wells’ shin guard. The game was delayed by rain for nearly two hours, and during the delay, X-rays came back negative. Bichette struck out in his final at-bat Saturday.

“It didn’t look great, but we’re at the point where if you can play, you can play,” manager John Schneider said Saturday. “Bo understands that, and everyone understands that. I don’t think it needed stitches or anything, but there was a lot going on.”

Bichette is third in the major leagues with a .311 average. He has 18 homers and leads Toronto with 93 RBIs in 139 games this season.

He also leads the majors with 181 hits and 44 doubles and is hitting .418 (33-for-79) during a 20-game on-base streak.

Ernie Clement started at shortstop for the Blue Jays, who began Sunday with a three-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East.

The latest AP poll is out. After a dramatic first week of action, not much changed at the top of the rankings with most teams pulling out wins, but there was still quite a bit of movement throughout.

And we did see some upsets and impressive wins with four ranked teams (the Arizona State Sun Devils, Florida Gators, Michigan Wolverines and SMU Mustangs) all losing — Florida, SMU and ASU are no longer ranked as a result.

The top seven schools in the rankings, on the other hand, outscored their opponents by a combined 307-26. In all, four AP-ranked teams scored 70 or more points, the second time that has happened in the AP poll era (since 1936).
