The latest series of The Crown may have received a fair bit of criticism – but the drama surrounding the drama is also garnering new fans who are watching from the beginning.

One such enthusiast is US rapper Cardi B, who tweeted her 26.2 million followers to engage in some discussion about the hit series.

Season five of The Crown, which launched at the beginning of November, covers the 1990s – arguably the most controversial period in the Royal Family’s history – featuring the break-up and affairs of Charles and Diana, among other storylines.

Critics say Netflix should do more to make viewers aware the show is a fictionalised version of real events, and say the timing of the latest series is insensitive when the royals are still mourning the Queen.

But Cardi B appears to be one of the many new fans who have started watching amid all the headlines surrounding the backlash.

“Y’all wanna talk about The Crown?” she wrote on Twitter.

In response to a follower who asked for her “thoughts on Camilla and Charles”, the rapper revealed she is not quite up to speed yet, having only watched 13 episodes so far – with 10 episodes in each series, it sounds like the star was part-way through the second season when she sparked the online conversation.

More on Cardi B

Series five of The Crown launched on 9 November, and stars Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Dominic West as Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.

Cardi B told fans she is a fan of Princess Margaret, who was played played by Vanessa Kirby and later Helena Bonham Carter for series three and four.

“I like Princess Margaret… I can see me smokin cigarettes and eating biscuits wit her,” she tweeted.

Cardi B is not the first US singer to enjoy The Crown – with “ultimate superfan” Mariah Carey recently treated to an early screening of the latest series.

The singer shared a picture of herself wearing a tiara and drinking a cup of tea on a sofa with her dogs ahead of the preview.

Taylor Momsen nicknamed 'bat girl' after bat bites her during rock show

Taylor Momsen has been nicknamed “bat girl” after a bat bit her during a show.

Momsen’s rock band The Pretty Reckless were supporting AC/DC in the Spanish city of Seville on Wednesday night when the bat flew on to her leg during the song Witches Burn.

As fans pointed and shouted, Momsen, who is best known for playing Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl, asked them what they were pointing at before realising.

“There’s a f***ing flying bat on my leg right now, can someone help me please?” she said calmly into the microphone.

Her composed reaction was noted – a concert-goer can be heard in the crowd murmuring “very professional” in Spanish.

“I must really be a witch,” Momsen said as her bandmates and backstage staff tried to remove the bat.

When it was finally gone, she threw an arm into the air and said: “Gracias. It’s alright and the bat is fine. He’s going to be my new friend.”

After the gig, Momsen was taken to hospital for a rabies shot. She posted on Instagram saying: “He was cute, but yes, he bit me… so rabies shots for the next two weeks.”

She also shared a picture of the bite marks, showing four red puncture wounds on her thigh.

Hospital staff called the singer “bat girl” after seeing the story appear on local news, Momsen said in her post.

Some people are comparing her bat incident to the moment rock legend Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat 42 years ago.

“That was just Ozzy’s way of passing the buck. You have been chosen as the princess of darkness,” posted one X user.

The Pretty Reckless are supporting AC/DC throughout their entire Power Up tour which is coming to London’s Wembley Stadium in early July.

Robert De Niro has award withdrawn after calling Donald Trump 'monster' outside trial

Robert De Niro has been denied a prestigious award after making a speech calling Donald Trump a “clown” and a “dictator “outside the former president’s trial.

The actor, 80, joined a Democrat-organised event on Tuesday outside the New York court where Trump was on trial for falsifying business records to cover up an affair before the 2016 presidential election.

Standing by Manhattan Criminal Court, De Niro tore into the Republican – calling him a “monster” – and argued with Trump supporters who he called “gangsters”.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) decided to rescind an offer to award De Niro with the Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award, which he was set to receive on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said the event at which the actor would have received the prize “is proudly bipartisan, uniting those from across the political spectrum to celebrate the impactful work of local broadcasters and our partners”.

They added: “While we strongly support the right of every American to exercise free speech and participate in civic engagement, it is clear that Mr De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the philanthropic work that we were hoping to recognize.

“To maintain the focus on service of the award winners, Mr. De Niro will no longer be attending the event.”

De Niro said he supports the NAB in a response to US outlet The Hill, adding: “I wish them well for their continued good work.”

Joined on Tuesday by two former law enforcement officers who were at the US Capitol during the 6 January riots three years ago, De Niro said of Trump: “He doesn’t belong in my city.”

He also warned that should Trump be re-elected in November, “I can tell you right now, he will never leave”.

Trump called De Niro “pathetic” on social media after his outburst.

On Friday, Trump was later found unanimously guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up “hush money” payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

He is the first former US president to be criminally convicted. He maintains he is innocent and says he will appeal the verdict.

June is Pride month – dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ communities around the world.

The Grammy winner has shown her support for Pride and LGBTQ people on many occasions.

After the massacre that killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in 2016, she dedicated a show in Belgium to people in the city and at the club on the night of the attack, adding: “The LGBTQ community, they’re like my soul mates since I was really young, so I’m very moved by it.”

She has also said her song Set Fire To The Rain was supposed to be a “gay anthem”.

She has four nights booked in Germany for August at Munich’s Messe exhibition centre, which boasts a capacity of 80,000 – a booking she called “a bit random”.

She last played in the UK in July 2022 at the British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park.
