Mercedes-Benz has announced a new agreement to deploy technology from European EV charger developer Alpitronic as the latter expands its presence in North America. Mercedes plans to install its new partner’s 400 kW EV fast chargers, built locally in the US, as part of a broader $1 billion investment to expand North American charging infrastructure.
Mercedes-Benz remains a household name in the automotive segment, but as it has evolved for the all-electric age, the German automaker has invested big bucks in adjacent technologies to support its transition, including next-generation battery development and charging infrastructure.
In addition to its own line of home chargers, Mercedes has developed and begun implementing a global EV charging network for the public, which currently consists of 100,000 piles in the US alone.
In November 2024, the German automaker opened its first branded Charging Hub in North America near its US headquarters outside Atlanta. The station is part of a $1 billion joint venture to establish at least 400 Hubs that will become home to 2,500 DC fast chargers by 2030.
The automaker is also part of the IONNA joint venture with six other OEMs to install at least 30,000 additional fast chargers across the continent.
As part of the significant investment in chargers mentioned above, Mercedes-Benz is helping a European technology expand its US presence using 400 kW fast chargers built locally.

This morning, Mercedes-Benz announced a new agreement to make it the first DC fast-charging network to deploy Alpitronic America, Inc.’s HYC 400 at scale in the US. Per Mercedes’ president and CEO of high-power charging, Andrew Cornelia:

Alpitronic’s Hypercharge 400 piles offer up to 400kW charging and support for a wide output voltage range. They can also simultaneously charge two EVs at once at rates up to 200 kW. Alpitronic currently offers an array of charging port standards to EV owners, including CCS1 and CC2, but Mercedes states that the EV chargers it will roll out in the US will also offer NACS cables.
Although it was founded in Europe, Alpitronic has recently expanded to North America, opening a US corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, in November 2023.
To further add to the new partner’s goal of creating new jobs and expanding EV charger infrastructure stateside, Mercedes shared the HYC 400 chargers it will be deploying will be built at a local facility in Wisconsin. Mike Doucleff, CEO of Alpitronic Americas, also spoke about the new partnership:

Fueled by incentives from the Illinois EPA and the state’s largest utility company, new EV registrations nearly quadrupled the 12% first-quarter increase in EV registrations nationally – and there are no signs the state is slowing down.
Despite the dramatic slowdown of Tesla’s US deliveries, sales of electric vehicles overall have perked up in recent months, with Illinois’ EV adoption rate well above the Q1 uptick nationally. Crain’s Chicago Business reports that the number of new EVs registered across the state totaled 9,821 January through March, compared with “just” 6,535 EVs registered in the state during the same period in 2024.
At the same time, the state’s largest utility, ComEd, launched a $90 million EV incentive program featuring a new Point of Purchase initiative to deliver instant discounts to qualifying business and public sector customers who make the switch to electric vehicles. That program has driven a surge in Class 3-6 medium duty commercial EVs, which are eligible fro $20-30,000 in utility rebates on top of federal tax credits and other incentives (Class 1-2 EVs are eligible for up to $7,500).

The best part? All of the company’s heavy equipment assets – from excavators to terminal tractors to dump trucks and wheel loaders – all use the same 400 kWh BYD battery packs, Milwaukee tool style. That means an equipment fleet can utilize x number of vehicles with a fraction of the total battery capacity and material needs of other asset brands. That’s not just a smart use of limited materials, it’s a smarter use of energy.
As “extreme” weather events become more commonplace, the demand for reliable and portable energy continues to rise. In response to that growing demand for dependable off-grid power, Volvo has developed the new PU500 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to take electrical power when it’s needed most.
Designed to be deployable in a number of environments at a moment’s notice, the Volvo Energy PU500 BESS is equipped with approximately 500 kWh of usable battery capacity (up to 540 kWh total). More than enough juice, in other words, to power a remote construction site, disaster response effort, or even a music festival – anything that needs access to reliable electricity beyond a grid connection.
