A man has been found guilty of the rape and manslaughter of an NHS worker he attacked on a park bench.

Warning: This article contains details readers may find distressing

Mohamed Iidow “repeatedly” sexually assaulted Natalie Shotter, 37, while she was passed out in Southall Park, west London, following a night out.

His trial heard the mother-of-three died of a heart attack caused by the 35-year-old raping her “again and again”.

It can now be revealed Iidow has a previous conviction for sexual activity by seeking to groom young people online – which was not disclosed to jurors during the trial.

Ms Shotter was found dead by a passer-by in the park in the early morning of 17 July 2021, the Old Bailey heard.

Victim was ‘deeply unconscious’

Iidow had denied the charges against him but declined to give evidence during his trial.

He claimed the sexual activity was consensual, but CCTV footage showed she was “deeply unconscious” during the attack, jurors were told.

Prosecutors said Ms Shotter was lying down, showing “no clear movement” for around half an hour before Iidow approached her “nonchalantly”.

Following the attack, he drove to his home in Hounslow, west London, via a Shell garage where he stopped to buy cat food and mouthwash.

Iidow will be sentenced on 13 December.

Mum-of-three ‘had so much to give’

Ms Shotter’s mother, NHS cardiology practitioner Dr Cas Shotter Weetman, welcomed his conviction.

She said: “We’re delighted for her children and that we finally, finally, after three-and-a-half years, have got justice for Nat.”

Dr Weetman added: “She was a beautiful, beautiful girl, an NHS worker, worked for charities, mother-of-three, just the most amazing soul, [and] kind.

“She had so much to give, so much more to give.”

Kirsty O’Connor, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The investigation was extremely complex and involved working closely with the police and expert witnesses to establish what had happened to the victim and what led to her death.

“During police interviews, he stated that the victim was alive and consenting to the sexual activity with him. However, CCTV footage has proved that to not be the case, with the victim unconscious during the entire attack.”

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, who led the Scotland Yard investigation, described Iidow’s attack as “disturbing and shocking”.

He added: “This case has deeply affected those involved, due to its rarity and tragic details…

“I commend the strength of Natalie’s friends and family who have had to listen to these details throughout the trial. Iidow is now facing a long term of imprisonment.”

Alongside the photo, Cheryl wrote: “As I try to navigate this earth-shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being.

“Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our seven-year-old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.

“What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days.

“Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last.

“Thank you, Cheryl.”

“You never really know how you feel about someone until a moment like this happens,” Cowell wrote.

“Liam, I am truly devastated. Heartbroken. And I feel empty. And I want you to know how much love and respect I have for you. Every tear I have shed is a memory of you.

“This is so difficult to put into words right now. I went outside today, and I thought about so many times we had together.”

Cowell added: “I wanted to let you know what I would always say to the thousands of people who would always ask me. What is Liam like? And I would tell them you were kind, funny, sweet, thoughtful, talented, humble, focused. And how much you loved music. And how much love you genuinely had for the fans.”

Cowell also referenced the time he initially rejected Payne for being too young when he first appeared on the X Factor in 2008.

“I had to tell you when you were 14 that this wasn’t your time. And we both made a promise that we would meet again,” he wrote.

Remembering when Payne returned to the talent show’s audition process two years later, Cowell added: “A lot of people would have given up. You didn’t. You came back and within months the whole world knew Liam.

“And you never forgot the fans. I watched you spending so much time with people who had wanted to meet you. You really cared.”

He also revealed that the pair had met last year “just to sit and talk”.

Liam Payne's father reads tributes and kisses pictures outside Argentinian hotel where One Direction star died

Liam Payne’s father has visited the hotel in Argentina where his son died, as he read tributes left for the One Direction star.

Geoff Payne was seen reading messages and looking at flowers placed outside the Casa Sur Hotel in the capital Buenos Aires.

He was watched on by a crowd of mourners.

Sky correspondent Martha Kelner in Buenos Aires said: “Geoff paused occasionally to put on his glasses to read the notes written in English and picked up the pictures to kiss them.

“He also thanked fans for being there.”

The singer died aged 31 on Wednesday after falling from a balcony on the third floor of the hotel.

Payne’s father arrived in Argentina on Friday to arrange for the return of his son’s body to the UK.

Earlier, he was seen leaving a different hotel in the city, accompanied by British consular officials and security staff.

Argentinian officials said Mr Payne visited the city’s morgue to identify his son before meeting with the local prosecutor’s office to organise the repatriation of his body.

Local media reported he was expected to pick up some of his son’s belongings during the visit.

Geoff Payne was stoic as he spent around eight minutes walking around the tree outside the Casa Sur hotel where his son died.

It has become a makeshift altar over the past few evenings.

Fans have pinned pictures of Payne to the tree and left notes in tribute.

Geoff paused occasionally to put on his glasses to read the notes written in English and picked up the pictures to kiss them.

He also thanked fans for being there. While inside the hotel he was brought up by hotel staff to the third floor, where Payne stayed.

He wasn’t allowed into the exact room, which is still an active investigation scene but he was shown a room with a similar layout.

He earlier visited the morgue to confirm the identity of his son and to the prosecutor’s office to arrange for its repatriation to the UK.

On Thursday, Payne’s relatives said in a joint statement they were “heartbroken” by his death.

They added: “Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.

“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

Payne expressed gratitude to his parents during several interviews with the media in recent years.

His father, a mechanic, and his mother, a nurse, both made cameos in One Direction: This Is Us, a 2013 concert documentary about the band.

“When I see him on stage I absolutely burst with pride, but we do miss him so much,” Payne’s mother, Karen, said at one point in the film.
