Arc Boat Company’s fully electric Arc Sport model gets four to six hours of typical use on a single charge.

Arc Boat Company began sales of its second electric boat model in just three years this week. The new $258,000 Arc Sport was designed for wake sports enthusiasts and follows the company’s earlier Arc One, a limited-edition luxury cruiser.

While the startup produced fewer than two dozen of those earlier boats, it is gearing up for continuous production of the new model, which it unveiled on Tuesday.

The 23-foot Arc Sport can carry up to 15 people at a time. It boasts a large battery with enough power to last for 4 to 6 hours and has a top speed of 40 miles per hour. At its price, it will compete with high-end models sold by traditional boat makers like Nautique, MasterCraft and Malibu.

Arc is one of a handful of promising startups aiming to electrify boating for sports and leisure including GM-backed Pure Watercraft, and Stockholm-based X Shore.

Traditional fuel-burning boats contribute to significant environmental problems including noise pollution, smog, and water pollution that is visible floating on the water around them.

Arc co-founder and CEO Mitch Lee said he spent his younger years water skiing, knee- and wake-boarding on the Sacramento–San Joaquin river delta near Stockton, California, and always noticed the stench of burning diesel at marinas and runoff from engines.

He wanted to do something to reduce the negative impacts of these sports and partnered with a former SpaceX engineer, Ryan Cook, who is the CTO of the company, to make that, and a “better boating experience,” a reality.

Arc’s leadership team also includes veterans of boating, automotive and transportation companies including Tesla, Rivian, Lyft, Brunswick and MarineMax, which helped the EV boat maker convince investors their designs and technology could work.

About $110 million in early-stage funding for Arc was raised from a mix of celebrity angel investors and venture capital firms including the NBA’s Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, actor Will Smith and venture capital funds Andreessen Horowitz, Eclipse Ventures and Menlo Ventures among others.

Arc was able to design and start building its fully electric boats within a relatively short time frame, under three years, because the automotive industry had already invested years and billions of dollars building up a supply chain for components that go into electric vehicles, Lee said.

Buying components from trusted suppliers, rather than creating many from scratch like electric auto manufacturers Tesla and Rivian had to do in their earliest days, made it possible to get from concept to the dock in a few years rather than in a decade, the CEO emphasized.

Arc plans to begin deliveries of its new battery electric Arc Sport to customers this year.

Tesla rallied for a fourth straight session as the spat between CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump showed further signs of a cooldown.

Shares rose about 2% Wednesday and were up more than 12% this week.

Tesla investors also caught a spark of hope for the company’s robotaxi strategy after Musk said the service will “tentatively” launch in Austin, Texas on June 22. In a post on X, Musk said the first driverless robotaxi will travel from the factory to a customer’s house on his June 28 birthday.

Overnight, the Tesla CEO said in a post on social media platform X that he regrets some of his recent social media posts about Trump and that they “went too far.”

Last week, a public feud between the two erupted, dissolving a tight-knit partnership that included hefty donations to Trump’s re-election campaign and a leadership role for Musk in slashing budgets at the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.

Musk’s attacks on the Trump-backed massive tax and spending bill initially sparked the feud.

Musk blasted the plan on X, calling it a “disgusting abomination” that would hike the current deficit.

That escalated a tit-for-tat social media battle that resulted in Trump hinting at cutting government contracts with Musk’s companies and led to Tesla’s biggest-ever market cap loss.

Meta launches AI 'world model' to advance robotics, self-driving cars

Meta on Wednesday announced it’s rolling out a new AI “world model” that can better understand the 3D environment and movements of physical objects.

The tech giant, which owns popular social media apps Facebook and Instagram, said its new open-source AI model V-JEPA 2 can understand, predict and plan in the physical world. Known as a world model, these systems take inspiration from the logic of the physical world to build an internal simulation of reality, allowing AI to learn, plan, and make decisions in a more human-like manner.

For example, in the case of Meta’s new model, V-JEPA 2 can recognize that a ball rolling off a table will fall, or that an object hidden out of view hasn’t just vanished.

Artificial intelligence has been a key focus for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as the company faces competition from players like OpenAI, Microsoft and Google. Meta is set to invest $14 billion into artificial intelligence firm Scale AI and hire its CEO Alexandr Wang to bolster its AI strategy, people familiar with the matter tell CNBC.

Meta touted the benefits of its new V-JEPA 2 model in machines like delivery robots and self-driving cars. These machines need to be able to understand their surroundings in real-time to navigate the physical world.

Rather than relying on large amounts of labelled data or video footage, V-JEPA 2 reasons in a simplified “latent” space to understand how objects move, interact and respond, the tech giant said.

In September last year, leading AI researcher Fei-Fei Li raised $230 million for a new startup called World Labs, which aims to create what it calls “large world models” that can better understand the structure of the physical world.

Meanwhile, Google’s DeepMind unit has been developing a world model of its own called Genie, which it says can simulate games and 3D environments in real time.

DeepL on Wednesday said it was deploying one of the latest Nvidia systems that would allow the German startup to translate the whole internet in just 18 days.

This is sharply down from 194 days previously.

, DeepL is a startup that has developed its own AI models for  and competes with Google Translate.

Nvidia is meanwhile looking to expand the customer base for its chips — which are designed to power artificial intelligence applications — beyond hyperscalers such as Microsoft and Amazon.

It also highlights how startups are using Nvidia’s high-end products to build AI applications, which are viewed as the next step after foundational models, such as those designed by OpenAI.

The Cologne-based company is deploying an Nvidia system known as DGX SuperPOD. Each of the DGX SuperPOD server racks contains 36 B200 Grace Blackwell Superchips, one of the company’s latest products on the market. Nvidia’s chips are required to train and run huge AI models, such as the ones designed by DeepL.

“The idea is, of course, to provide a lot more computational power to our research scientists to build even more advanced models,” Stefan Mesken, chief scientist at DeepL, told CNBC.

Mesken said the upgraded infrastructure would help enhance current products like Clarify, which the company launched this year. Clarify is a tool that asks users questions to make sure context is incorporated in the translation.

“It just wasn’t technically feasible until recently with the advancements that we’ve made in our next-gen efforts. This has now became possible. So those are the kinds of advances that we continue to hunt for,” Mesken said.
