When Aventon updated its popular Sinch folding electric bike for the latest generation, it brought in a number of new features while also leaving out a few choice options as well. So we’re taking a deep dive into testing the Aventon Sinch.2 to see how well the company’s new model works.

One of the great things about Aventon is that you aren’t only limited to listening to what I have to say about the bike – you can try it yourself too! Aventon has partnerships with hundreds of local bike shops around the US, so there’s a good chance that you’ll find an Aventon dealer near you.

That means you can test the bike out yourself to feel how it fits your own riding style.

But if you’ve got five minutes, then you might want to check out my video review below for an overview of the important points of this new model. That way, you’ll have a better idea of what to look for when you test one out yourself.

What do I like about it?

There’s a lot to like about the Aventon Sinch.2. As a next-generation bike, it retains a lot of great features from the previous Aventon Sinch model and adds even more.

The step-through design makes it easy to mount, which is increasingly important for many different types of riders, such as those that carry bulky rear cargo or that have mobility issues that make it hard to swing a leg over a bike.

Despite the laid-back appearance, the decently powerful rear motor combined with the fat tires gives the bike plenty of on-road and off-road performance. That makes it both a comfort bike and a fun adventure-style bike, even if it isn’t quite as adventurous as Aventon’s full-size fat tire e-bikes.

I love that the company has included a torque sensor in the bike, which makes for a very nice upgrade to the pedal assist operation.

There are now four levels of pedal assist instead of five, but with the torque sensor is still a major upgrade because the pedal assist doesn’t just stick you in a preset speed based on pedal assist level. Instead, it actually modulates power in proportion to how hard you’re pedaling.

And I’m also a huge fan of Aventon’s turn signals, which they’ve included in the seat stay tubes at the rear of the frame. That’s a big value-added feature for me since the turn signals are both bright enough and far enough apart to actually be effective – something we don’t always see in other bike turn signals.

Aventon also decided to stop holding its rack and fenders back behind a paywall, instead including them as standard equipment. That’s another big win for value shoppers who can now include those often-demanded features in the cost of the bike instead of budgeting for adding them later.

And while this won’t affect your everyday riding, I’m also in love with the fact that Aventon brought their eco-friendly cardboard packaging to the Sinch.2. That means you can recycle everything in the box and aren’t left with a huge pile of Styrofoam to throw away after you’ve unboxed the bike.

What don’t I like about the bike?

While there are some major wins, there are also some areas that fell a bit short.

I wish Aventon had given the Sinch.2 the same hydraulic brakes from the Aventure line. Yes, I know the Sinch hasn’t had hydraulic brakes in the past, but this would have been a great time to add them. While mechanical brakes are just fine, there are major advantages to hydraulic brakes that would have been nice to see.

I also would have loved to see a bump up in battery capacity. The 48V 14Ah battery is sufficient, and it’s also nicely designed to pop up with a springloaded release when you turn the key. But as nicely designed as the battery is, extra range from a 17.5Ah battery would have been a nice upgrade and would have only required one extra row of battery cells in the pack.

Even so, the range is actually still pretty good, and the more effective pedal assist means you’ll be more likely to use some pedaling effort to stretch out the range. While I’m as guilty as the next guy for sometimes being overly reliant on the throttle, the Aventon Sinch’s pedal assist is efficient and a great way to extend those rides even further. The company says you’ll get 55 miles on the lowest power setting, but even a moderate power setting should easily still net you over 30 miles of range.

And that long range is partly due to the modest top speed of the bike. This is one last area where I can see room for improvement. The 20 mph (32 km/h) top speed isn’t unlockable to offer class 3 operation, meaning you’re stuck at around 20 mph on both throttle and pedal assist. I wish Aventon had given us the option to unlock a higher speed, especially for those of us that like to commute on long straightaways where a higher speed makes a big impact on trip time.

But to be fair, those three main complaints don’t take away too much from the bike and still leave us with a number of major improvements on an already great design.

Summary

To conclude, I’d say that the Aventon Sinch.2 is a very nice improvement over the previous Sinch, leaving us with the well-engineered frame and slick-looking design but bringing in more value components like the torque sensor and included accessories.

The bike is comfortable, easy to use and great for both recreational and utility riding. It offers good power, good range, and a great look.

All told, I think it’s a good deal for $1,799. Hydraulic disc brakes would have made me call it an even better deal, but you’re still getting a lot here. And the fact that you can actually try it at a local dealer can’t be ignored, as most e-bikes in this price range require you to order them on faith and internet reviews alone.

QuantumScape has integrated its 'Cobra' process, reducing solid-state production time tenfold

Solid-state battery developer QuantumScape shared another exciting milestone today: integrating its long-developed “Cobra” solid-state separator manufacturing process into its baseline production. This step technology significantly reduces the overall footprint and production time of QuantumScape’s proprietary solid-state cells, setting the stage for commercialized production.

Much of our QuantumScape updates the past couple of years have pertained to the progress of its QSE-5 solid-state sample cells (because, let’s face it, that’s the most exciting stuff). However, some of QuantumScape’s production techniques are just as innovative as its cell technology.

In many ways, QuantumScape’s cream of its solid-state crop is its assembly lines, especially since arguably the most challenging hurdle for bona fide solid-state battery integration is scaled production at a cost that OEMs will be willing to opt for over lithium cells, which also won’t bankrupt the company.

We’ve known of these plans since 2023, when QuantumScape shared two phases of its assembly line overhaul using a fast separator heat-treatment process – Raptor and Cobra.

Raptor was completed two years ago and introduced a step-change process, allowing continuous flow heat treatment to process the separator films faster with less total heat energy. The next phase, “Cobra,” was expected to build off Raptor and add even faster processing, particularly in the cell’s ceramics. Per the solid-state battery developer, Cobra is a “potential game changer in scaled cell production.”

By early 2024, QuantumScape was beginning to gear up for high-volume production of its solid-state electrolyte separator using the “Cobra” equipment and process, and by last December, was ready for initial separator processing on the QS-0 assembly line for B-sample cells.

QuantumScape has confirmed that Cobra has been fully integrated into the company’s baseline production processes, achieving a 2025 goal while enabling gigawatt-level solid-state cell production.

QuantumScape’s Cobra separator is production’s secret sauce’

“What’s so special about a solid-state separator process?” Well, a lot actually.

The QuantumScape team will be the first to tell you that its proprietary solid-state separator is the proverbial key that unlocks the startup’s leading and potentially industry-changing performance in energy density, charge times, battery life, safety, and cost.

We all know that solid-state battery technology has the potential to enable a paradigm shift in electric mobility, providing cars, planes, boats, and plenty of other vessels with cells that will enable them to travel farther than ever. This technology has often been deemed a “holy grail” for electric mobility and while some companies, including QuantumScape have developed viable solid-state cells, none have scaled to mass production yet.

As we’ve reported on many times in the past, QuantumScape remains a leader in the space as one of the companies that appears closest to achieving the feat, thanks to its aforementioned Raptor and now Cobra manufacturing processes.

Hence why today’s news is a big deal.

In addition to unlocking the potential for solid-state cell production itself, QuantumScape says Cobra is the core innovation that will allow the technology to be manufactured at a gigawatt-hour scale. This breakthrough is expected to lay the groundwork for higher-volume B1 sample production and the startup’s path to market.

Furthermore, the technology supports QuantumScape’s licensing model with Volkswagen Group, which was announced a year ago. In this model, contract manufacturing can potentially help avoid tariffs by transferring IP instead of physical goods, especially as battery demand continues to grow steadily despite geopolitical tensions.

Looking ahead, we will see how Cobra contributes to QuantumScape’s production progress in 2025, hoping to get a more concrete timeline on when its solid-state batteries could hit the EV market.

Volkswagen’s electric SUV is set to receive an extensive facelift, both inside and out. The Volkswagen ID.4 will adopt the brand’s new look, similar to the upcoming entry-level ID.2. Here’s what we know so far.

The ID.4 is already due for its second major refresh. It received significant upgrades for the 2024 model year, but Volkswagen is planning to overhaul the electric SUV to align it with its new electric models.

Like the ID.2all concept, first unveiled in 2023, the new ID.4 will feature Volkswagen’s new design language with an updated front end, a powerful stance, and clean character lines.

According to VW’s tech boss, Kai Grünitz, the first vehicle set to receive the updates will be the ID.3 next year, followed by the ID.4. Grünitz told Autocar that the new look will include a “lower and squatter stance,” giving it “a family resemblance to the ID.2.”

For the first time, VW’s tech boss also confirmed that the changes will include an interior overhaul, including a new dashboard. Volkswagen also plans to bring back physical buttons.

“We’re going to bring back a round knob for the volume control,” an insider said (via Autocar), adding that “it has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it.”

We got a sneak peek of what the interior will look like with the ID.2all. After revealing the first interior images in 2023, Andreas Mindt, VW Passenger Cars head designer, said, “The future of Volkswagen interiors has arrived in the ID 2all concept car.”

We will have to wait to learn the final specifications. However, the new ID.4 is expected to arrive with increased range and performance, as VW advances new electric motors, batteries, and other EV technologies.

The ID.3 will be the first Volkswagen to receive the new look in the second half of 2026, followed by the ID.4 later in the year.

Volkswagen will introduce the production version of the ID.2, kicking off a new series of entry-level EVs. An SUV version of the ID.2 and a smaller, lower-cost ID.1 will join the lineup shortly after.

In the US, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $45,095 with an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles. In Europe, the ID.4 starts at around €35,000 ($41,000) with a WLTP range of up to 550 km (342 miles).
