Just over a year after unveiling its ultra-fast Hyper SSR supercar, GAC Aion has officially launched their EV in China and begun first deliveries. Available in three different versions, this supercar boasts some seriously impressive specs, including a 900V platform and a blistering 0-100 km/h time.

Every time we at Electrek post something about GAC-Aion, it’s usually some form of industry leading technology. The brand exists as an all-electric marque of Guangzhou Automobile Corporation (GAC) Group and currently sells five electric vehicles, including the Aion LX Plus, which offers an impressive 626 miles of range (NEDC).

In addition to manufacturing EVs GAC Aion has also developed impressive charging technology in China. Last summer, the company unveiled a 480 kW DC fast charger, which can charge its Aion V SUV from 30–80% in under five minutes. The automotive technology has also joined Chinese competitors like NIO and CATL in entering the battery swap segment.

While a majority of Aion’s EV offerings have been SUVs to date, it shared plans for a supercar called the Hyper SSR in September of 2022 alongside the beginning of presales. Now, a year later, GAC Aion has delivered the all-electric supercar alongside some specs that are sure to turn some heads.

Hyper SSR to compete with Rimac Nevera, Tesla Roadster

That is, if Tesla ever successfully delivers its long-promised second-generation Roadster. The Rimac Nevera now has some serious competition as GAC Aion began deliveries of the Hyper SSR to customers in China today.

Although GAC Aion originally announced two versions of the Hyper SSR when it originally debuted, we’ve since learned that consumers will actually be able to choose from three variants, priced as follows:

  • Hyper SSR – RMB 1,286,000 ($176,380)
  • Hyper SSR Sprint – RMB 1,386,000 ($190,100)
  • Hyper SSR Ultimate – 1,686,000 ($231,250)

In addition to official pricing, the automaker shared that the supercar comes equipped with SiC chips within a 900V platform, helping power an electric drive assembly that boasts maximum efficiency of 94.5%.

“SSR” stands for “super, sport, race,” which could also be the individual names of each of the EV’s three motors, combining for over 900 kW of power and 12,000 Nm of torque. For comparison, that’s double the advertised torque of Tesla’s incoming Roadster, which is also supposed to go 0-100 km/h in 2.1 seconds.

The standard Hyper SSR can acceleration to that speed in 2.3 seconds, while the Sprint and Ultimate versions can do so in a blistering 1.9 seconds. GAC Aion still has some work to do if it wants to best the Rimac Nevera, as that EV has already achieved a world record 0-100 km/h in 2.86 seconds (amongst a dozen other records).

With deliveries now underway in China, this will be supercar to keep an eye thanks to its aggressive, all electric speed. What do you guys think?

Overview

Big, versatile power is the name of the game with the Growatt INFINITY 2000. With 2048Wh of capacity and 2200W AC output, its capable of powering nearly anything, anywhere. 

Beyond its power and capacity, it also has a variety of ins and outs that make it even more useful. Standard AC outlets, 30A Anderson Outlets, and TT-30 AC outlets all make the INFINITY 2000 ready for a wide variety of uses.

Design

The overall layout is simple and effective. On the front is a screen and all of the outputs and on the right side of the INFINITY 2000 are the different input options. Two large, solid carrying handles make it easy to move despite being such a powerful battery pack.

Intrinsic to its design is the ability to stack expansion batteries on top of and beneath the INFINITY 2000. One the left side of the INFINITY 2000 is a port to connect a battery expansion. Two additional batteries can be connected and take the total capacity of the system up to 6144Wh. I love this modular design that allows the system to be expanded when more power needs arise or a budget allows. 

Additionally, the expansion batteries each operate independently. Rather than depending on the main unit, this allows each battery to charge and discharge by themselves.

The Growatt INFINITY 2000 has an impressive variety of outputs. There are dedicated buttons in each category to activate/deactivate a specific type of output. 

In the top left are DC outputs. INFINITY 2000 has a 10A car outlet, two 3A barrel plugs, and a 30A Anderson outlet. On the top right are USB outputs. There are four USB-A fast charge outputs and two 100W USB-C outputs. Along the bottom are the AC outputs. First is a TT-30 plug followed by three traditional AC outlets.

For inputs, the INFINITY 2000 has an AC port and an XT-60 port for solar/vehicle input.

What impresses me the most is that the INFINITY 2000 incorporates the 30A Anderson outlet and a TT-30 plug. These are rare additions to portable power stations of this size and vastly increases its usability. Both of these outputs are huge benefits for RV owners and DIYers. They can make a direct connection to RVs and when combined with external batteries can make live off-grid last even longer.

Cold weather ready

Typically, batteries don’t like cold weather. But, the INFINITY 2000 is using LiFePO4 batteries and operation is guaranteed in conditions down to -22°F. While I don’t typically camp in the cold, that kind of performance ensures that the INFINITY 2000 will be ready to go in almost anywhere.

INFINITY 2000’s self-heating function also helps in day-to-day storage conditions which can get cold. Where competitors lack battery-saving self heating, the INFINITY 2000 ensures reliable performance in storage and in use.

Recharging the Growatt INFINITY 2000

Despite its massive capacity, the Growatt INFINITY 2000 can fully recharge in just 1.6 hours thanks to its fast charge AC capability. With fast charging on just AC power, the INFINITY 2000 pulls 1,800W to get the battery back up to full lightning-fast.

In addition to the rapid charge, INFINITY 2000 has a quiet charging feature that will limit the input wattage to 400W which doesn’t require any active cooling. This mode is great for charging at night or when you don’t want to be disturbed. 

EPS with AC/DC Auto On

Another benefit of the INFINITY 2000 is its EPS, or Emergency Power Supply mode. This gives an instant AC startup after a power outage. This is a huge benefit for people who work from home and want to be prepared in case of power outages. I always have my working computer plugged into some form of battery backup.

Tesla finally releases Autopilot safety data after more than a year

Tesla has finally decided to release its Autopilot safety data report after taking a break of more than a year.

For years, Tesla used to release a “Vehicle safety report” that tracked miles between accidents in its vehicles based on the level of Autopilot used or not used and compared it to the industry average.

The automaker used the report to claim that its Autopilot technology resulted in a much safer driving experience and that its vehicles would crash much less often than the average car in the US even without Autopilot.

The data was always limited and criticized for not taking into account that accidents are more common on city roads and undivided roads than on the highways, where Autopilot is most commonly used.

But it was the only data that Tesla was willing to release about its Autopilot and therefore, it was still useful to track progress.

However, Tesla stopped reporting the data after Q4 2022 without explaining why.

Tesla has now decided to release the data more than a year later:

Interestingly, Q1 2023, which Tesla is only releasing now, showed a significant decrease in miles driven between accidents compared to the same period for the year prior, which might explain why Tesla stopped releasing the data at that time.

The automaker is only now releasing the data as Q1 2024 shows a significant improvement for Autopilot:

In the 1st quarter, we recorded one crash for every 7.63 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, we recorded one crash for every 955,000 miles driven. By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2022) shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles.

The data is better compared year-over-year rather than quarter-over-quarter due to seasons having a significant impact on accident rates.

Electrek’s Take

This data doesn’t include Full Self-Driving although that gets murky as of late since Tesla now uses the same software stacks with limited functionalities for Autopilot.

It’s nice to see a significant improvement in safety in Q1 2024 despite the limited usefulness of the data. However, I’m really disappointed in Tesla for only releasing the data now that it starts looking better and stopping to release the data in Q1 2023 as it looked bad.

This shows a lack of transparency that doesn’t help build confidence in ADAS systems.

This 'supercharger on wheels' brings fast charging to you

Mobile car care company Yoshi Mobility just launched a DC fast charging EV mobile unit that it likens to “a supercharger on wheels.”

Yoshi Mobility saw that its existing customers needed mobile EV charging in places where infrastructure has yet to be installed, so the Nashville-based company decided to bring the mountain to Moses.

“We recognized a demand among our customers for convenient daily charging, reliable private charging networks, and proper charging infrastructure to support their fleet vehicles as they transition to electric,” said Dan Hunter, Yoshi Mobility’s chief EV officer and cofounder.

The company says its 240 kW mobile DC fast charger, which can turn “any EV” into a mobile charging unit, is the first fully electric mobile charger available. It can provide multiple charges in a single trip but doesn’t detail how they charge the DC fast charger or who manufactured it. (I’ve asked for more details.)

Yoshi is launching its mobile charger on two GM BrightDrop Zevo 600s and will introduce additional vehicles throughout 2024. It aims for full commercialization by Q1 2025. (I wonder if the Zevo 600 ever charges itself? Yes, I asked that too.)

Yoshi Mobility says it’s already deployed its EV charging solutions to service “major OEMs, autonomous vehicle companies, and rideshare operators” across the US. Its initial customers are made up of large EV operators managing “hundreds” of light-duty vehicles requiring up to 1 megawatt of energy per day that don’t yet have grid-connected EV chargers. I’ve asked Yoshi for details of who it’s working with, and will update if they share that info.

The company says pricing is based on location and enterprise charging needs. Once under contract for service, the service will be deployed to US-based customers within 10 days.

To date, Yoshi Mobility has raised more than $60 million, with investments from GM Ventures, Bridgestone, ExxonMobil, and Y-Combinator in Silicon Valley.
