Astros ace Verlander to start Game 1 of ALDS
HOUSTON — Justin Verlander will start Game 1 of the American League Division Series for the Astros on Tuesday.
It was a forgone conclusion the AL Cy Young Award front-runner will start that game, and manager Dusty Baker made it official Saturday.
The worked out at Minute Maid Park as they wait to play the winner of the wild-card series between Toronto and Seattle.
He said they hadn’t yet set their rotation past their opener because the opponent had not been determined.
“We know it, but we don’t want to solidify it until we know,” Baker said. “It could change depending on who we play.”
Verlander, 39, led the AL with 18 wins, and his MLB-leading 1.75 ERA is the lowest for an AL qualified pitcher in a full season since Pedro Martinez’s 1.74 ERA in 2000.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner’s ERA also was the lowest of his career, besting his 2.40 ERA in 2011, when he won his first Cy Young and was also voted AL MVP while with Detroit.
Verlander, who also won a Cy Young in 2019, is a top candidate to win the award for a third time this season after returning to form following an almost two-year absence following Tommy John surgery.
The Astros have five off days between their final regular-season game and their postseason opener because of the extra wild card this season.
Baker believes the layoff will be good for a handful of his players who are nursing minor injuries but isn’t sure how the time off will impact the team overall.
“You don’t know how beneficial it is until you start playing again,” he said. “You can speculate and guess, but you can’t see the effects of anything until you get there. So, let’s see. It’s been a good break for us.”
One way he knows it’s a good thing for the Astros is that they’ll be able to line up their rotation exactly how they want it.
“More than anything, you can set your rotation,” he said. “That’s the biggest advantage with this break. Some teams can’t set the rotation. You’ve got to go with who you got to get to the next step.”
UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava will not play Saturday against No. 1 Ohio State because of a concussion, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Iamaleava was injured during last week’s loss to Nebraska. He began experiencing concussion symptoms after the game, according to On3, which first reported that Iamaleava would not play.
With Iamaleava out, redshirt sophomore Luke Duncan will make his first career start. Duncan has not attempted a pass in college as he tries to take down the top-ranked Buckeyes.
Iamaleava has thrown for 1,659 yards with 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in his first year with the Bruins after transferring from Tennessee.
He led UCLA to three straight wins in October, including a victory over then-No. 7 Penn State, but the Bruins (3-6) have lost two straight and need to win out to become bowl eligible.
