Avs captain Landeskog expected to miss ’23-24

Colorado Avalanche forward and captain Gabriel Landeskog, who missed all of this season after knee surgery, is having another procedure on his right knee and is expected to miss the 2023-24 regular season, the team announced Tuesday.

Landeskog will have a cartilage transplant in his right knee, and the procedure will be performed Wednesday by Dr. Brian Cole at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. It will be his fourth surgery dating to 2020.

The 30-year-old Swedish forward told reporters on Tuesday that he has not contemplated retirement.

“Until I’ve exhausted every option, I’m just going to continue pushing forward,” Landeskog said on Zoom. “… I’m confident in the player I am. I’m confident in the athlete I am.”

He missed the entirety of the 2022-23 regular season with a knee injury that led to him having surgery in October. He was initially expected to miss 12 weeks, but ultimately, the timetable for his return was continually pushed back to the point that he was ruled out for the remainder of this year’s playoffs.

Landeskog and the organization hope this more extreme approach allows him to get past the knee injury that has sidelined him. Named Colorado’s captain in 2012 at age 19, he has played 807 regular-season and playoff games for the team and is signed through the 2028-29 season.

“In terms of replacing him, it’s really hard to replace your captain,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland told reporters via Zoom on Tuesday. “I guess knowing that he’s out, it potentially opens up avenues that weren’t available to us last season.”

Landeskog, who is one of the NHL’s longest-serving captains, has been one of the most pivotal players in the Avalanche’s lineup. He has given them a top-line left winger and has produced nine 20-goal campaigns. He scored a career-high 30 goals and finished with 59 points over 51 games during the 2021-22 season.

He has not played since hoisting the Stanley Cup in Tampa, Florida, in June 2022 after helping the Avalanche win their third title in franchise history. He was instrumental in that run, recording 22 points in 20 games.

During that run to the Cup, Landeskog was second on the team with 11 postseason goals, while his 22 points made him one of four 20-point scorers for the Avs that postseason.

Landeskog on Tuesday said he’s “leaving the door open” to a possible return for postseason play in 2024 but that “it’s too early to tell.”

His injury stems back to the 2020 bubble season when he was sliced by a skate in a playoff game against Dallas, suffering a cartilage injury on the bottom of his patella.

Colorado already knows what it means to go a full season without Landeskog. His injury was one of a few that the Avalanche had to work around while eventually winning the Central Division title this season.

Landeskog was with the team during their first-round playoff series against the Seattle Kraken. He took the ice at morning skate a few times, but his actions were limited. Although the Avalanche managed to win without Landeskog in the regular season, his loss was felt throughout the postseason.

The Kraken upset the Avalanche in seven games with a multi-faceted approach in which depth was one of their core tenants. The Kraken received contributions from all four of their lines along with their three defensive pairings and without Andre Burakovsky, one of their leading scorers who was part of the Avalanche’s Cup-winning team before he signed with the Kraken in free agency last summer.

The Kraken also won the series without 40-goal scorer Jared McCann, who sustained an upper-body injury following a hit from Cale Makar in Game 4 that led to Makar being suspended in Game 5.

Not having the depth to match what the Kraken possessed became an issue. All but one of the Avalanche’s goals in the series were either scored by one of their top-six forwards or by defensemen such as Makar and Devon Toews.

Missing the 2023-24 season means the Avalanche could move Landeskog’s $7 million salary cap hit to long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to create financial flexibility ahead of what could be another hectic offseason.

The Avalanche have eight unrestricted free agents with two of the most prominent being J.T. Compher and Evan Rodrigues. Then there’s the team’s three-player restricted free agent class which is led by their two 2019 first-round picks in Bowen Byram and Alex Newhook.

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Brewers centerfielder Jackson Chourio‘s status for Game 2 of the NLDS against the Chicago Cubs on Monday is uncertain after an MRI on his right hamstring came back inconclusive, according to manager Pat Murphy.

Chourio, 21, left Game 1 on Saturday after legging out an infield hit in the bottom of the second inning. It’s the same hamstring he injured in July — also while playing against the Cubs — putting his immediate playing future in doubt.

“I can’t give you a definitive, but I know that we’re going to test some things today,” Murphy said on Sunday afternoon. “He’s going to be out there today. I don’t know that he’ll do much, but the MRI came back and it’s inconclusive and it’s not a serious hamstring strain, but it’s not necessarily something that won’t limit him.”

Chourio was 3 for 3 in the game before leaving. Murphy indicated rookie Isaac Collins would likely take Chourio’s place in the lineup if the latter player can’t go.

The Brewers manager also announced lefty Aaron Ashby will start Game 2 for his team, though he probably won’t last long after throwing 1⅓ innings on Saturday. He’s likely opening the game to help neutralize Cubs leadoff man Michael Busch — also a lefty — who homered to start Game 1.

“He could go as long as we want him to,” Murphy said of Ashby.

Righty Quinn Priester is likely the bulk innings guy for the Brewers after Ashby, but Murphy stopped short of declaring his plans. The Cubs are countering with lefty Shota Imanaga, who pitched in Game 2 of the wild-card round against the San Diego Padres.

“He’s a competitor,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “And I think he’s a thinking-man’s competitor, and he also pitches with a lot of joy on the mound, while competing at a really high level.”

Imanaga has a 5.73 ERA in four career games against the Brewers, including three starts this season.

“I think all the hitters, they understand what they need to do, and I think that’s the Brewers’ offense,” Imanaga said of his struggles against Milwaukee. “Even yesterday, just the next guy was up, the next guy was ready. So I think, for me, it’s just making sure, take it one out at a time, and then thinking about that one out.”

Murphy was asked about facing the second-year Cub who features a rising fastball and a sinking splitter.

“His heater plays way up,” Murphy said. “If it says 91, the hitter sees it as 95 to 96.”

Milwaukee won Game 1 in a route, 9-3.
